About SMG
"Radio and Television Shanghai and its subsidiary Shanghai Media Group (hereinafter referred to as “SMG”) were inaugurated on October 21, 2009, with combined assets of over 10 billion yuan and a workforce of about 10,000. This set a seal on the restructuring of the old Shanghai Media Group, whose restructuring plan was approved by state authorities in August 2009, making it China's first provincial-level media group to receive green light for the reform of separating broadcasting from production".
"Radio and Television Shanghai remains as a public institution whose primary undertakings include news production, frequency management and platform operation for the radio and television industry. It has 11 radio channels, 29 TV channels (14 analog and 15 digital), 10 newspapers and magazines, as well as new media platforms such as IPTV, Web TV and mobile TV. SMG is a commercially-registered media company, whose core business covers such fields as content production, business operation and investment for films, TV shows, comics and animations, financial reports, sports games, fashion programs, documentaries, large events, TV shopping and new media services. It has been striving to build a complete industrial chain with trans-media and trans-regional expansion. In 2011, SMG accelerated the consolidation of its corporate resources and nurtured five primary business units including new media, financial and business information services, entertainment, E-commerce and juvenile comics and animations. On December 29, 2011, BesTV New Media Co Ltd successfully floated its A-shares in the Shanghai bourse, becoming the first SMG subsidiary to go public as well as the first public-listed new media company in the domestic radio and television industry. In 2011, just two years after the reform of separating production from broadcasting, Radio and Television Shanghai and Shanghai Media Group grossed ¥15.2 billion in annual revenue (including ¥7 billion from advertising sales), up 32% over 2010. With a remarkable foresight, a local stronghold and a global vision, SMG is dedicated to showcasing the glamour of Shanghai and spreading the Shanghai School Culture on its way to become China’s leading cultural group and strategic investor with global influence".
